Female Entrepreneurship Development: Ability, Circumstance and Choice

The Global Entrepreneurship Monitor's 2012 Global Report identifies five countries in which women’s entrepreneurship rates surpass or are equal to those of men. Two of these countries, Panama and Ecuador, are in Latin America. At first glance, this seems like a very positive development! Several paragraphs down in the report, however, we notice that most of these female entrepreneurs are necessity-based, i.e. they started businesses “out of necessity” as opposed to “out of opportunity.”
