WeXchange: What will you do differently come Monday morning?

Still a little tired from my morning flight, I am very excited about the MIF’s first ever pitching conference, WeXchange, held in Miami this week with over 50 women entrepreneurs – and an equal number of investors.

I hope they were energized by the sessions, speakers, and mentoring sessions. I myself was impressed by the creativity and dynamism of these women and their business ideas, led of course by the winner of our pitching competition, Angela Cois, whose start-up Last Room makes last minute hotel reservations really easy. But the runners-up were also impressive: Cecilia Calderon of Chile-based DentiDesk, Sylvia Chebi of Greentizen, Uruguay; Ana Hornstein of Fotter, Argentina; Montse Piquer of Nidmi, Spain; and Yanina Baglieri of DineroTaxi, Argentina, and all the other businesswomen I talked to over the couple of days. To help you come back Monday morning ready to take on your next big idea, I wanted to briefly put together some of the recommendations.

 We had been discussing some of the technical, financial, social and business innovations developed and then delivered by EWS across the municipality to increase or enhance service delivery to the un-served. Necessity is clearly a major driver for innovation – but can innovation (of any nature) on its own have the impact we need to provide services to all? During my week with EWS I saw how the potential for developing innovative ideas and approaches can best be harnessed by an organization that has an enabling and open culture; where an ethos of incremental learning and a willingness to learn by doing goes hand-inhand with evidence-based strategic decision-making.

Building climate resilience in Haiti, Jamaica and Saint Lucia

The Caribbean is among the world’s most vulnerable areas to climate change. While this year’s hurricane season has been relatively quiet, farmers, fishers and the region’s tourism operators live under the constant threat that the next storm that might destroy a year’s worth of work. Moreover, the more gradual threat of sea level rise will require a range of actions in order to protect livelihoods and communities.

This is why the MIF’s PROADAPT and the IDB’s Climate Change team have partnered to present three private-sector focused projects in Haiti, Jamaica and Saint Lucia that will leverage the resources of the Pilot Program for Climate Resilience (PPCR).
