The environment of PPPs in Latin America: the municipal level as the next border

In early June, the MIF organized a webinar attended by over 75 people from the private and public sector to present and discuss the results of the latest Infrascope. I was very happy about the participation among the participants who participated with some great questions!  Among the themes that stood out are how to apply the Infrascope methodology to cities. Especially growing medium sized cities face growing demands for basic services such as such as urban transport, clean water and sanitation, public safety, health and education.

New Directions in Public-Private Partnerships

Thursday marks the start of the Annual Meeting of the IDB Board of Governors in Panama. One issue certain to be discussed is the region’s continued infrastructure gap, which hinders productivity and development in many countries due to lack of basic sanitation, safe and efficient modes of transportation, and reliable access to electricity. At the Annual Meeting, there will be a panel organized by the MIF during which top experts will discuss how Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs) can be utilized as an effective contractual approach for infrastructure development and service provision. The panel, New Directions in PPPs: New Actors, New Sectors, and New Sources of Funding, will take place on Friday March 15th from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.

Those watching will learn how PPPs can leverage the innovation, expertise and financial capacity of the private sector for financing, designing, building, operating and maintaining infrastructure projects through long-term, output-based contracts. The panel will also explore when and when not to use PPPs and look at new actors, new sectors, and new sources of funding for these projects.

The 2013 PPPAmericas conference is only about a month away. PPPAmericas is the leading event focusing on public-private partnerships (PPPs) in Latin America and the Caribbean. I recently spoke with the MIF’s lead PPP specialist, David Bloomgarden, about what is planned for this year’s conference, which will take place February 14-16, 2013 in Cartagena, Colombia.
