Haiti: Making a Living from Creativity / La creatividad como un medio de vida

 

Is it possible to make a living from creativity? According to renowned designer Donna Karan, it is. In fact, as she says, Haiti is one of the most creative countries she has ever visited. However, for a country to succeed, it is critical to generate opportunities for creativity that will translate into positive economic and financial results. This has been one of Karan’s objectives in Haiti, where she has invested time and money on a project whose purpose is to provide both design guidance and access to higher value markets to artisans in Port-au-Prince, Leogane and Jacmel.

Rio+20: Dispatch from the ground

 

Having been in the ground now for two days at the 
Rio+20 United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development, I thought it would be a good idea to share some of the most interesting things I have heard so far in the sessions I have attended. I have been at the Corporate Sustainability Forum since Saturday. The forum, attended by nearly 2,500 people, is an event to discuss concrete private sector solutions to energy poverty and climate change.

Partnership & Innovation with State & Municipal Governments in Brazil

 

Public-Private Partnerships (PPP) and the MIF are strongly related in Brazil, particularly on subnational levels. The MIF started building up its experience in 2001 with the successful PPP project in the State of Minas Gerais (ATN/MT-8724-BR). Other successful projects followed, one with the Ministry of Planning to support the Brazilian states to implement PPPs (ATN/MT-9587-BR) and the other with the Brazilian Institute of Municipality Administration (IBAM) to foster a new model looking at micro PPPs in the Brazilian municipalities (ATN/ME-11054-BR).

El Climascopio: Un enfoque de mercado sobre el cambio climático

El cambio climático representa un gran reto para América Latina y el Caribe: la necesidad de reducir las emisiones de gases de efecto invernadero y mejorar la eficiencia energética, y al mismo tiempo ofrecer a los ciudadanos con mayores niveles de energía. La Agencia Internacional de Energía prevé que las necesidades energéticas de la región será 75% mayor en 2030, lo que requiere aproximadamente $ 1,8 mil millones en nueva infraestructura energética. Las necesidades son inmensas: 45 millones de habitantes de la región no tienen acceso a servicios eléctricos, y aproximadamente 83 millones de personas aún cocinan con biomasa tradicional.
