The Business of Next – News from the Global Entrepreneurship Congress 2016

Since my first visit to this city back in 2006, many things have changed. At the time, there was little startup activity and only a few pioneers –incubadora Creame and Promotora– establishing angel networks and the first Venture Capital fund of Colombia. Today, the city is home to other funds, co-working spaces, accelerators, and Ruta N: an initiative that turned around a “suspicious” neighborhood in Medellin and made it into a flagship for innovation and entrepreneurship. Medellin has been a good example of how the public and private sectors can join forces to create a vibrant environment where entrepreneurship can flourish.

The Entrepreneurs of the Future: Women!

I recently got back from Buenos Aires, where I spent International Women's Day (IWD) surrounded by entrepreneurs, most of them women. It was a very different IWD for me. Not only because I found myself in a part of the world that I don't get to visit that often, but because for the first time in such a day I wasn't listening to women refer to their situation with respect to men as being disadvantaged. The message I received was actually quite the opposite. On Friday March 8th, I met a group of seven women entrepreneurs, who have started internet companies in the Latin America in the past year or two.

We need help!

Despite the title, this is not the MIF’s latest fundraising tactic or our new recruiting strategy. This is how NXTP Labs’ co-founder Gonzalo Costa ended his presentation at the MIF’s headquarters in Washington, DC yesterday afternoon. The title may very well sum-up the state of our region’s ecosystem for early stage investing: it needs help. The region still falls short on many aspects, starting by a culture that fears and denies failure, an insufficient number of role models, few specialized service providers and seasoned early stage investors. The good news is that investment models that help address some of these challenges, such as the one proposed by NXTP Labs or the Brazilian21212 accelerator, are appearing in the region and being well received by regional markets.
