Upcoming IDB BASE Forum helps private sector focus on the “base of the pyramid”

This June 6 and 7, the IDB is holding the second International BASE Forum in Medellin, Colombia. The conference is being organized by our colleagues at the IDB’s Opportunities for the Majority (OMJ) sector. The Forum, much like OMJ, will focus on the dynamic world of business models that engage with “the base of the pyramid”—the poor and low-income populations that used to be largely underserved by the corporate world, but are increasingly seen by the private sector as having enormous untapped potential as consumers and actors. I recently sat down with OMJ manager Luiz Ros to learn more about the event.

A Preview of PPPAmericas 2013

Por Elizabeth Terry

The 2013 PPPAmericas conference is only about a month away. PPPAmericas is the leading event focusing on public-private partnerships (PPPs) in Latin America and the Caribbean. I recently spoke with the MIF’s lead PPP specialist, David Bloomgarden, about what is planned for this year’s conference, which will take place February 14-16, 2013 in Cartagena, Colombia.

Dignity in the dump

Por Elizabeth Terry

We had a visit from a movie star at the IDB this week! Sebastiao “Tiao” dos Santos is one of the principal subjects of “Waste Land,” a 2010 documentary that won many prestigious film festival prizes and was even nominated for an Oscar. The film depicts the community of catadores, or “waste pickers,” who eke out a meager living collecting and selling recyclable materials in Jardim Gramacho, a massive landfill on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro. Renowned artist Vik Muniz spent time at the dump creating striking multimedia portraits of some of the catadores, and the documentary shows the process of the artistic collaboration and how the artist and his subjects inspired each other.

Greening the blue seas of Barbados

Por Elizabeth Terry

I had always heard about how clear and vibrant the Caribbean waters are, but until I came to Barbados this week I never had a chance to see for myself. Everything they say is true! I could spend hours staring out at the different shades of turquoise, sapphire and lapis—and hope to once my conference duties end...

The beautiful Caribbean is also the lifeblood of Barbados and its sister islands. The local economy depends on tourists coming to swim, surf, sail and dive. Fishermen set out early every morning to catch the fish that will feed not only hungry tourists, but also their own neighbors and families. If these islands are to continue to thrive, the sea must stay healthy.
