The general objective of the project is to enhance the skill sets and business acumen of the Andros fly fishing guides and their families while sustaining the island’s natural ecosystem.

Propósito

The expected result is the strengthening of the Bahamas Fly Fishing Industry Association so that it will have the capacity to develop a sustainable business model that will be piloted in Andros and once proven can be replicated in other islands in The Bahamas.

Componentes

  • Strengthening The Bahamas Fly Fishing Industry Association: Under this component, the objective is to strengthen the capacity of The Bahamas Fly Fishing Industry Association and undertake a market and strategic analysis of the industry to map the ecosystem and better define the opportunities to establish a sustainable industry
  • Defining a community-based business model for fly fishing guides: Under this component, a sustainable community-based business model will be developed for fly fishing based on a market-led approach. While the model will focus on business generation for the fly fishing guides, it will also result in a clear definition of the value chain required to support their activities

The activities to be financed under this component include: a) conducting a market analysis and designing a strategic plan and road map for sustainability for the industry; b) establishing the appropriate governance and management structure for the BFFIA through training in strategy, governance and management ; c) developing partnerships with key stakeholders to include international fly fishing associations, ecotourism marketing platforms (agents) and financial institutions in order  to provide access to markets and financing for its membership; and d) formalizing the setup of the BFFIA office along with the appropriate operational support infrastructure. The expected results of this component will be: a completed strategic plan for the industry, formalization of the BFFIA governance and management structure and

The model will therefore be inclusive of other businesses in the community that may benefit and also inspire the emergence of new business to fill the gaps identified. The activities to be financed under this component include: a) using the inputs from the market analysis and strategic plan to design a new business model for a fly fishing enterprise that is inclusive of the community in which it is located; b) training of fly fishing guides to international standards in fly fishing angling as well as in business management so that they can effectively operate the business model developed; and c) piloting, evaluating and improving of the business model developed to arrive at an optimum solution given local realities. The expected results from this component will be that at least 10 of the fly fishing guides trained in sustainable best practices participate in the new business model designed to transition the guides to a more viable business enterprise that can serve the needs of visitors from new markets
