Background

Recent research has underlined the importance of creating the educational conditions that allow children less than 5 years of age to develop their fullest potential. The development of physical, cognitive, social and emotional aspects makes future adults more productive and able to assume the challenges in life. However, Colombian reality is far from delivering the required services for such developments. Due to lack of qualified human resources, financial means, awareness, infrastructure, and affordable alternatives, most low income households do not have access to quality Early Childhood Development (ECD) services. During 2008, only 32 percent of children under the age of 5 attended a community center, day care, or preschool. The attendance rate is even lower in rural areas, the rate being 20 percent while the rate in urban areas is 36 percent.

Goal

Contribute to increase the access of high quality and integrated ECD services (education, nutrition, care) to low income families in Colombia.

Support the sustainable expansion of the aeioTU model through a franchising solution in (Bogotá, Medellin and Barranquilla)

Components

  • Creation of an ECD Social Franchise Model: To scale up the aeioTU business model through a franchising concept, allowing entrepreneurs to start their own aeioTU franchises. Crafting a well-functioning social franchising system will demonstrate that business concepts can be applied successfully to improve service delivery in the social sector.
  • Contribute to the creation of an enabling environment for ECD in Colombia: The purpose of this component is to to create an effective enabling environment for ECD in Colombia.
  • Communication, Learning & Catalyzing : To advocate and generate awareness of the importance of ECD and disseminate this information among aeioTU´s customers, policy makers, private enterprises, social organizations within and outside off Colombia..    

This component will prepare Fundación Carulla to set-up and grow a franchise network as well as create the franchise business model, evaluate different financing options and develop support services for franchisees.

The main contribution of Fundacion carulla would be through the creation of academic modules for training and learning about ECD. An enabling environment would consist of organizations – suppliers, distributors, users, communities, government agencies, universities and technical schools – involved in the delivery of integrated ECD goods and services, this would increase the competitiveness in this market, bring down prices, raise the quality, improve the skills of teachers, create new market niches and raise awareness for ECD in the public and private sector.

Asegurar continua alineación del proyecto con la estrategia de la organización. Re-pensar continuamente los modelos de expansión para asegurar que generen impacto y evaluar su visibilidad tanto de mercado como financiera previo a su puesta en marcha. Gestionar la exención de impuestos ante la DIAN desde el inicio del proyecto. Conocer y manejar adecuadamente los gastos no elegibles. Realizar sondeos de mercado previos a abrir convocatorias formales.
