MIF supports business networking methodology for rural Peruvian farmers

Feb 12, 2015

The Multilateral Investment Fund (MIF), a member of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) Group, has recently approved a US$323,000 grant for a project in Peru with HELVETAS Swiss Intercooperation that will support AGRORURAL, a Peruvian government agency specializing in rural development, in adopting a proven business networking methodology developed by the private sector. Thousands of campesino, or smallholder famer, families are expected to benefit from improved access to markets for their food products.

The methodology that is being transferred to AGRORURAL was developed by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO); and with support from the MIF, was later validated and adapted by HELVETAS Swiss Intercooperation for use in different regions and with diverse partners (NGOs, regional and local governments and private entities). The methodology promotes the use of associative business models by small-scale rural producers to address their problems, reach economies of scale on a collective basis, and take advantage of market growth in nearby medium-sized cities.

The project will train and mentor staff members of AGRORURAL’s regional and district offices, which will benefit at least 1,000 campesino families during the project’s execution. Three years down the road, it is expected that the application of this methodology by Peru’s public sector will have benefited another 3,600 campesino households. The potential impact is far greater, however, given that AGRORURAL’s target population includes nearly 4 million people living in poverty or extreme poverty in rural areas.

About the MIF

The Multilateral Investment Fund (MIF), a member of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) Group, is funded by 39 donors and supports private sector-led development benefiting low-income populations and the poor—their businesses, their farms, and their households. The aim is to give them tools to boost their incomes: access to markets and the skills to compete in those markets, access to finance, and access to basic services, including green technology. A core MIF mission is to act as a development laboratory—experimenting, pioneering, and taking risks to build and support successful micro, small and medium business models.
