Who we are

An Innovation Lab

The Multilateral Investment Fund serves as an IDBG innovation laboratory to promote development through the private sector by identifying, supporting, testing and piloting new solutions to development challenges and seeking to create opportunities for the poor and vulnerable populations in the LAC region. To fulfill its role, the MIF engages and inspires the private sector and works with the public sector when needed.

Created in 1993 by 21 donor countries, we are the largest provider of technical assistance for private-sector development in Latin America and the Caribbean. We have financed more than US$2 billion in grants and investments for private sector development projects. In all, we have funded more than 2,000 MIF projects with various partners.

Funds for our activities come from contributions made by our member countries—now totaling 39—in Latin America and the Caribbean, North America, Europe, and Asia.

What we do

Creating
Opportunities

We identify, design and finance projects to test pioneering approaches that create economic opportunities for poor and vulnerable populations in Latin America and the Caribbean.

We focus our efforts in three thematic areas: climate-smart agriculture, inclusive cities and knowledge economy. These three areas cover many of the most urgent development priorities for Latin America and the Caribbean, from adapting to the effects of climate change, to improving quality of life for people in rapidly-growing urban areas, to creating and filling
21st-century jobs.

Integrated in all our projects, we tackle cross-cutting topics such as gender and diversity, including indigenous and afro-descendant populations, environmental and social sustainability, and the enabling environments.

How we do it

We partner

We have a strong regional presence in 26 countries in the region. We work in partnership with local, mostly private partners, to help fund and carry out pilot projects. Most of our partners are known for their potential to innovate, their local knowledge and their ability to promote and scale the solutions developed within our partnership. We also work with global partners that share our goals, such as corporations, foundations, and other multilateral organizations.

We partner with leading organizations to facilitate and
foster the generation of scalable solutions to the challenges
facing Latin America and the Caribbean.
