Reducing poverty is a global challenge, but solutions can be global as well. Social innovations from Asia can be adapted to Brazil. Successful techniques from projects in Peru can be applied in the Dominican Republic. The Multilateral Investment Fund (MIF) has identified a successful poverty reduction method developed by the Indian NGO Hand in Hand, and our partner World Vision Brazil has customized it for Brazil. This approach develops income-generating opportunities for 50,000 people in 10 states in the northeast of Brazil, using a combination of technical assistance, access to finance, and linkages to markets and industry in relevant sectors. A regional network of grassroots organizations helps to expand, strengthen, integrate, and institutionalize the job-creation project.

Here are our 3 main lessons of this south-south knowledge transfer.

By Elisabeth Burgess, author of Inclusive Savings for Remittance Clients: A Practical Framework

En español

Last month, a manager at a Latin American microfinance institution told me he’d been tasked with revamping the company’s strategy to promote savings products among its low-income clients, while simultaneously overseeing its growing international remittances business. As he brought together the two business units under his leadership, he wondered: Could migrants and their families be a good target market for savings products?

What normally comes to mind when thinking about the nexus between energy, water and climate change?  Probably things like energy-efficient water pumps, solar panels for water purification, or methane recovery in wastewater treatment plants - all routinely discussed in conferences and seminars around the world, and featured in the scientific literature grappling with climate change mitigation and water scarcity issues.

As the Multilateral Investment Fund enters its third decade, it has transformed itself into a more disciplined development laboratory, with the explicit aim of translating experimentation and innovation into systemic impact. Strong diagnostics and project design, deep understanding of clients and executing agencies, knowledge sharing, and rigorous metrics are now at the core of our business model. But rigor must be matched with stronger client service. This means opening up our laboratory to new clients and partners, and streamlining our processes.

By the MIF Haiti Team

Today marks the fifth anniversary of the devastating earthquake that shook Haiti and its partners in an unprecedented way. We’re taking the opportunity reflect on the work the MIF has done in Haiti since that day, and looking ahead, we are thinking about how we can better respond to the country’s needs. The MIF has been active in Haiti since 1995 and there were a number of active projects at the time of the earthquake. We immediately provided support to our current partners, and then focused on contributing to rebuilding the Haitian economy as a whole.

Cocoa is an up-and-coming agricultural product in Haiti. In November of last year, we wrote about a new project the MIF started in the two main cocoa-growing regions in Haiti - the Grande Anse and the North department. 7,000 small cocoa farmers will raise their incomes by 25% by improving their growing practices, increasing yields per acre and cocoa quality, as well as transitioning to higher-value and quality beans.

As the Multilateral Investment Fund (MIF) enters its third decade, it retains its core attributes and client focus:  support for private sector-led innovation to benefit the poor and vulnerable in Latin American and the Caribbean—their firms, their farms, and their households. But it has evolved into a more disciplined laboratory, with the explicit aim of translating experimentation and innovation into systemic impact.

Almost three years ago, the MIF asked us to apply a “gender lens” to all of our operations. So our Early Stage Equity team brainstormed about how we could do this, and decided to take an entrepreneurial approach.

First, we began contacting our colleagues and friends who had a role in building entrepreneurial ecosystems in the region. After many calls, a clear focus for our intervention emerged: women entrepreneurs’ need to strengthen and expand their networks, and to find women role models.

When one thinks about Haiti, digital television may not be the first thing that jumps to mind. How would it work? And who could afford it? The entrepreneurs at NUtv, Haiti’s first and leading prepaid digital television service, began working on a solution two years ago. Their objective: grow the network to areas without access to television programs, keep prices affordable, and make the service accessible to a large number of people.

Since opening its first eyeglasses store in 2012, Ver de Verdad has expanded to a network of 21 stores across four cities in Mexico and won the National Award for Quality from the Secretary of the Economy in 2013. With support from the MIF-OMJ Accelerator Facility, in September the company launched the country’s first Mobile Diagnostic Center (MDC), offering affordable eyeglasses to low-income rural and peri-urban communities in the outskirts of Culiacán. The MIF project design team recently had the chance to accompany the MCD to see for ourselves the services it provides.
